Sassy My Ass

A friend pointed me to the leaked trailer for the American remake of My Sassy Girl. It pretty much is what I thought it would be — a caucasianized carbon copy of the original. The main thing that I walk away feeling after watching the trailer is that this version looks so mediocre. If you want to see an original, creative, funny romantic comedy, watch the Korean version!

  1. I liked the Korean version.  I agree this American version won’t live up to it.  The story has to be a little different because the cultural differences in the characters.  I haven’t heard anything great about any of the Korean movies adapted to American movies.  I would have loved to see someone like Ben Stiller to take the lead.  I think he would have fit the character better than whoever this guy is.

  2. it does look so mediocre. trying too hard perhaps? the piano scene is so touching because all the nuances are so inherently korean, even down to the song choice. i dont think most non-asians  will get how cute & cheesy the scene is! haha.. anyway, we’ll see how it turns out! hopefully, it’ll encourage ppl to see the original 🙂

  3. woWw.. that was awful. they sabotaged the original Sassy Girl.
    she’s not even cute. I can’t believe they named the movie the same exact name
    as the Korean original. i wouldn’t support this movie.

  4. see this is exactly what i was talking about. i hate my sassy girl. it’s like this idealized thing that a guy saves a girl. why can’t a girl save a guy? take care of his vomit and stuff? why can’t she get dumped when the guy says “he’s not ready?”

  5. My Sassy Girl is one of those movies that I hate loving. All that vomiting makes me very ill, and yet there is a charm to the tale. While it has a predictable ending- the joy is in the journey towards the end. That said- there is NO way that they can remake this film for an American audience- it’s the wrong story. (But I feel the same way about The Lake House and Il Mare too). Once you watch the original, the copy is pale and lifeless in comparison. I’m trying to think of a Korean movie that I love that would be a good remake and can’t. It took me forever to find a drama storyline that I thought you could re-film and market successfully. By the time you take out the things that make the story work, there’s not much left.

  6. Vomit is a way of courtship among birds.  I find that scene so romantic.  I feel that there aren’t enough Boy Meets Girl, Girl Throws Up on Boy, Boy Gets Girl Until Boy Finds New Girl Who Throws Up Better stories in Hollywood.

  7. I absolutely resolutely agree that My Sassy Girl itself was a movie full of cliches.  Maybe the reason why the knock-off Americanized version sucked was because the original one wasn’t much better.  Did The Departed suck?  No because the original was a good story.  I can’t even redeem this movie for its Asian influence, because the latter is never given credit.

  8. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH N0 WAY iS THAT EVER G0iNG T0 C0MPARE T0 THE K0REAN VERSi0N!! >.<  T0TALLY AGREE WiTH THAT 0THER GUY, i THiNK MY BRAiN JUST iMPL0DED WHiLE WATCHiNG THAT TRAiLER o.O;;
